Ok, let’s admit it, this is wrong, VERY WRONG, but OH SO GOOD. If you’re on a diet, or health conscious, or are looking for an apple recipe that will make you fit and trim then I suggest you just move along. HOWEVER, if you’re looking for a guilty fall pleasure, then you might want to give this a try.
What you will need (for 2 deserts):
.2 Granny Smith apples
1/4 cup butter
2 apple cake donuts
3 tbls sugar
1/4 tsp cinamon
16 oz package of caramels
8 oz package of cream cheese
2 Tbls water
3 strips of bacon
What you’re going to do:
Set your grill up for direct grilling.
While your grill is coming up to temperature. Slice your donuts in half like a bagel. Mix your sugar and cinnamon.
Then melt you butter and cook your bacon. Bacon will have tendency to flair up, so don’t turn your back on it. Keep it moving around on the grill. As flair ups occur, move the bacon away from the flames.
After the butter is melted and the bacon cooked to a semi crisp stage, remove both from the grill, and coarsely chop the bacon and set aside for later.
Slice the Granny Smith apples into about 1/8 – 1/4 inch rounds, and remove the cores.
Place them on a well oiled grill and cook until slightly softened and showing nice grill marks. While your apples are cooking place the caramels, creme cheese, and 2 Tbls of water in a pan on the grill and cook, stirring occasionally until smooth and creamy.
Now dip your donuts (cut side down) first in the butter, then in your cinnamon sugar mix. Place on the grill, butter/sugar side down until warmed through.
With everything grilled and cooked up, it’s time to start building that mountain of sinful goodness.
Begin with the bottom half of the donut, then place a grilled apple slice, and spoon caramel sauce over it.
Continue this sinful, shameless, stacking until you run out of apple slices, then top with the top 1/2 of the donut, and give it one last healthy hit of caramel sauce, and garnish with bacon.
